Hi everyone, and welcome to “Metalliwhat ?” This year, as you might have guessed, the special issue will be on Christmas. And now, you’ll say : “But… Christmas is not Metal !” Well in fact, it is ! We’ll see in this episode that there is a lot of cases where they meet, Starting with this TV show of December 24th, 1988 : At the time where MTV was still a good music channel, (even was a music channel at all, actually) Ozzy Osbourne and his guitarist Zakk Wylde introduce new songs of bands like Anthrax, Def Leppard, Flotsam & Jetsam, Kiss or Yngwie Malmsteen. Yeah, at that time, new songs that went on TV had balls. But, except the set of the show, not much to do with Christmas, I concede. Let’s go a little further in Christmas Metal, with this album released in 2008, called : “We wish you a Metal Xmas and a Headbanging new year” It’s a project that brought together some big names of Metal, and they “metallized” Christmas songs. And there are great names : Ronnie James Dio, Alice Cooper, James Lomenzo, Doug Aldrich, Tim “Ripper” Owens, and so on… That said, they are not all amazing… I might well love Metal, we have to agree that this one is particularly disgusting. Personally, my favorite is the cover of Chuck Berry with Lemmy, Dave Grohl and Billy Gibbons. Just this insane line-up is already huge ! Here’s what it sounds like : Oh, sorry ! This is priobably the biggest project in Christmas albums, but there were a lot more ! For example, Twisted Sisted made one : Twisted Sister, here’s a band I didn’t talk to you about yet ! They are among the pioneers of Glam Metal, and in a book I read, they were called “The nightmare of puritan America” Partly thanks to the look of their singer, the one and only Dee Snider. But I think there is a good chance that you heard them before, with this cult song : Back to Christmas albums with a man, what am I saying ? A true legend : Christopher Lee, whom you surely know for his parts of movie villains like Dracula, the creature of Frankenstein, the Count of Rochefort, the Man with the Golden Gun, Saruman, the Dr Catheter, Lord Summerisle, Count Dooku, anyhow, he was one of the classiest men in cinema, may he rest in peace. Well, Sir Christopher Lee, he did some Metal ! Solo, and also as a guest on songs from Rhapsody of Fire, that I already talked about. And about Christmas, well he also did some : All of this are album that really were released, but I’d like to show you one that did not came out. It’s a sort of sketch with a fake commercial for a Christmas Metal album, that was made in 2013 for the Jimmy Kimmel Live!, a well known talk show in the USA, watch this : Aren’t they beautiful, with their ugly Christmas sweaters ? The fun thing is that there really are Metal versions of this sweaters, you can fin them anywhere online ! To finish with albums, I’d like to show you a band that probably made the more of them : Trans-Siberian Orchestra Trans-Siberian Orchestra, or TSO to make it simple, it’s a huge musical and visual project imagined by Paul O’Neill, musician, writer, producer, in short : the boss. It’s a kind of Rock Opera for which they wanted a very exceptionnal show, So we’re on 2,5 hours of concert with more than 20 musicians and singers on stage, an insane light show, cranes, pyrotechnics, etc… They released a trilogy of Christmas albums, and the first half of their shows is a story of Christmas with music, with as you just heard, pretty heavy songs. A big part of the TSO brains comes from the Metal world, as 4 of them met in the band Savatage, that I told you about in the episode on classical music, and they have amongst their musicians guys like Al Pitrelli, who played with Megadeth, or Russel Allen, singer of Symphony X. By the way, in the 2nd part of their show (which is more Metal than Christmas), they play some Savatage songs. And so, this is now the thing I want to see more than anything in the world, since I learned all I just said. So about 2 weeks ago when I wrote this special issue. So far, the only thing I knew about this band was the music of a video I found on a website, in a time where there was no facebook, no youtube, and I don’t even know if there was msn already, so that’s that! Oh, the sudden aging… It’s one of these video you often see in the US, where the guys are so serious about their Christmas decorations that they light up their house in sync with a song. So, with TSO it looks like this : And if you find it not Metal enough, don’t worry, someone did it with Slayer : All my respect for the work he spent on it, but even if the result is really impressive, a song that goes “Raining Blood” is not very Christmas Spirit, isn’t it ? By the way, when some Metal musicians try to do Christmas songs it doesn’t always go very well. Look what the singer of Alestorm posted on facebook not so long ago : I don’t know if it comes from his voice, his keyboard sound, or from knowing that it’s miles away from what he does with Alestorm, but there is something very creepy about it. Let’s stay on creepy ! With a video my sister showed me last year. Thank you, Claudia ! If you watch “Metalliwhat ?”, you know Year Zero, noe of the Ghost songs I showed on episode 17th : Well, there is a cover of this song, Christmas version. I know, it’s hard to believe that a song praying Satan can be done with Christmas theme, but they did. Because in english, “Père Noël” is called “Santa Claus”. So… It is so awesome ! Check out the entire song, it’s really well made ! That said, I will leave you because I have a Christmas meal awaiting, and I have to wrap Claudia’s gift. I kiss you all, and wish you a merry Christmas ! See you next year ! It was “Metalliwhat ?” A show on Metal presented by Hubert Thanks to … The list of songs played during the show is available in the description Thanks for watching and see you next time ! Dear Santa, This year, I haven’t been very nice, but if you could still think about me and bring me a little something, like… I don’t know… A ticket for a Trans-Siberian Orchestra’s concert in the USA next year, with the plane ticket and the hotel, I would be very greatful ! Thank you !
